Sanne's Story

A path back to the wild

Hi, I’m Sanne Giesen - nature connection guide, somatics practitioner, community herbalist, and devoted student of the Earth.

Guiding others into deeper connection with nature - and in turn, themselves - is the core of my work. I believe that humans and nature are not separate, but part of one living, breathing web. It feels like my soul’s mission to help reweave that relationship, and to empower people to live fully, freely, and in deep alignment with the land.

But like many of us, I had to find my own way back first.

The Inconvenient Teacher

I was born with a chronic illness (Mastcell Activation Syndrome) - persistent teacher that shaped how I move through the world, how I listen, and how I connect. It taught me that energy is precious. That rest is vital. That my body carries a wisdom beyond words.

That path led me toward burnout, and ultimately to healing - not through pushing or fixing, but through softening. Through listening. Through returning.

Coming Home to Nature

I grew up in a family that loved the outdoors. We spent hours walking, cycling, crafting with natural materials. As a child, I was fascinated by healing herbs. I devoured my grandmother’s herbal book, soaking up its knowledge like roots soaking up rain.

In my teens, I drifted - nature wasn’t "cool,” and I forgot for a while. But in my early twenties, illness brought me to my knees. Most days I was bedridden. My mental health suffered alongside my physical health. But even then, something inside me whispered: go outside.

One day, I gathered enough strength to join friends on a short camping trip. I arrived anxious, in pain, exhausted. But after a few hours outdoors - something shifted. The anxiety softened. My body exhaled. I felt… better. I didn’t understand it then, but it planted a seed that would change everything.

"It planted a seed that would change everything."

Rewilding the Body

That moment led me deeper. I began researching, learning, discovering that others too had experienced profound healing through time in nature. I met my partner Johan, who shared my love for the wild, and introduced me to bushcraft and ancient earth skills.

But this wasn’t about survival or “roughing it” - it was about belonging. About remembering. Like the first time I made fire with a bow drill - no matches, no modern tools. Just wood, breath, and patience. If you force it, the ember won’t come. But if you move with the rhythm, in flow, in meditation - the ember arrives. Shaking hands cradle it into a bundle of grass. A breath. And suddenly: fire. Ancient. Magical. Alive.

That’s the kind of connection I want others to experience - not just doing nature, but being with it. Working with it. Letting nature change you.

The Wisdom of Nature and Nervous System

Through this journey, I began to see the parallels between nervous system regulation and rewilding.
Both are about slowness, safety, and relationship. Both require us to attune - to the body, to the land, to the rhythms of life.

Nature became my teacher, my co-regulator, my mirror. Nature reminded me that I already belong - not because I earned it, but because I’m part of it.

This is the wisdom I now share with others: that regeneration (or healing) doesn’t look like fixing. Sometimes it looks like remembering, returning and rooting in.

"Remembering. Returning. Rooting in."

Bridging Psychology, Plants & Place

In 2015, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Trauma, Grief, and Talent Development - a mix that made little sense at the time, but now forms the perfect foundation for the work I do.

I began my career in the field of Diversity & Inclusion, later branching into Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. In 2020, I made a conscious shift: I wanted to bring my skills as a psychologist and consultant together with my deep love for the outdoors.

I trained in nature connection, somatics, and outdoor group facilitation. I became a certified herbalist, pouring every spare moment into wildcrafting and deepening my relationship with plants. And in 2020, I officially founded The Wild Roots Guide - a home for this work, and a place for others seeking reconnection.

This Work Is My Offering

Today, I guide individuals and groups through nature-based practices that weave together psychology, herbal wisdom, somatic awareness, and earth skills.

My way of working is rooted in nature’s rhythms, regenerative practices, and your sovereignty.
I don’t see myself as a guru or fixer - I simply walk beside you, helping you listen more deeply to the wisdom you already hold.

Because you do know the way.

And it’s my joy, and honor, to walk that path with you.

My Roots in Learning

While much of my work is shaped by lived experience, deep nature connection, and the quiet teachings of the land, I also hold a strong foundation in professional training and education.
I believe in walking with both the wild and the wise - combining ancestral knowledge with modern understanding, so you can feel supported every step of the way.
